Decline?

As i type this post, i see that many bloggers are leaving yugioh as well as Wilson Tsang(a.k.a 3zinferno). It's weird i thought yugioh could return to its former glory with the banlist, but i was wrong again!

It's sad to see a game i love lose its competitive side and literally turn into a "children's card game."

But it is losing its competitive edge.

Prize support, competitive play, jacked-up rulings, competitive players(if any) turn out to be in it for the money and not fame( a lot of ARG writers).

To not worry about this, i've been playing magic, which does not have the above problems and i like the game in general. In fact, I recently got 3rd at my last fnm. (No need to worry about vanguard, ill be playing it again once Shadow Paladins come out in a month).

But Yugioh, i'm really not sure about anymore. I'm conflicted between selling my agent deck and just focusing on magic and vanguard or keeping it just to play casual.

What are your thoughts on yugioh atm?

Most recent event

Hey, its Grant!

Sorry for being gone long, as i stated in my last article, me and cameron wont be able to update the blog frequently because of school. However, a most recent event has sparked my interest.

One day, I looked at Michael Bonancini's blog(DeathAspect) and saw an article of reform from Kris
Perovic.

In it, he stated the current state of the game and necessary steps to bring yugioh back to a competitive state. It got me thinking about Yugioh, Magic:The Gathering, Cardfight Vanguard, as well as their current states.

Yugioh: With the new banlist, yugioh's metagame has balanced out at last. We havent had a skilled format since september 2010(before the arrival of six sams). However, i would call it a game more suited for casual players.

Magic: Game reads "Competitive players enter here."

Vanguard: Semi- competitive. Was meant to be a fun game, though.

The difference between yugioh and cardfight vanguard was that yugioh was a new kid on the block that gave magic a run for its money. That was when i was in Kinder to 2nd grade. Now, Yugioh still is the #1 card game, but what in the future? Vanguard was meant to be casual to begin with, but bushiroad still flies winners out to nationals and worlds.

What about Konami?

What will the future lie ahead for Yugioh?

The answer is: I don't know.

Local Report: We get turned down, little kids take over locals, I break up with bubbleman, and a hero rises.....and falls

  1. Get  a good nights sleep
  2. Eat a good breakfast
  3. Get to the venue early
  4. Do last some last minute testing before the regional
  5. Compete at the regional
As you probably inferred this is my checklist for whenever I go to regionals. So why isn't number 5 crossed off? It didn't happen and since the regional is now over it never will happen. Before the regional even started Grant, Brett, and Ryan all had some shit to do so they couldn't come. It was up to Chris and I to represent the team. Or so we thought. At the pace we were moving at we were going to be at the venue at about 9:00 and registration didn't end until 10:00. We have arrived at many 700+ person regionals about an hour early and have had no problems so were not worried. Well we should have been. There was a huge delay, only 6 konamai employees were checking people in and with a line still at 200 strong that process was anything but fast. Then suddenly the line just stopped moving. Then at 11:30, after a full hour of no movement a konami employee informed us that they had only rented 2 rooms instead of the usual 3 because they had unforeseen numbers of people even though this kind of large scale regional has happened before. So they turned us away. It seemed like the 200 people that were mislead(us included) were going to riot lol. Konami even called security just to make sure that didn't happen, so that was pretty funny. After the turning down, Chris and I decided to go to locals and pick up our just starting out yugioh playing friend: Ryan(not the Ryan from the team).

So the three of us arrive at locals along with alot of the same people that were turned down at regionals. The little kids had invaded our locals and were screaming and shouting as they played some sort of bat shit, everything goes form of yugioh. It looked more like a playground than a local yugioh shop. Hands down the funnies thing though were the little kids playing the street fighter arcade game. They were fighting each other(in the game) and as each of them landed a hit on each other they would yell something out in korean(maybe they were cussing) and one kept yelling MINECRAFT for no apparent reason. A kid right next to the street fighting kids had just bought a plain green mat and proceeded to take a permanent sharpie marker and try to make recatngles(in the shape of a yugioh card of course) well they looked nothing like rectangles and instead looked like deformed traingles. When his dad pointed out that he had pretty much ruined the mat he proceeded to cry and throw a tantrum(mind you these kids were not babies they were ages 9-11) right at the same time the street fighting kids were screaming in joy or horror, I couldn't tell and the minecraft kid yelled MINECRAFT. Suffice to say the three of us nearly died laughing. I can hardly keep a straight face while writing this. I am not exaggerating it was complete anarchy but so hilarious. After a while the mat tantrum kid was carried out by his parent and the strret fighting kids were replaced by more mature individuals, though the minecraft kid continued yelling MINECARFT for absolutely no apparent reason at all throughout the day. The rest of the little kids(about 10 in all) moved over to the yugioh tables and proceeded to sack with six sams, mill the nuts with lightsworn, steal games with bls, miss timing, play cards recklessly, waste power cards, and use banned cards all the while being very loud about the whole process. I'm not sure why 10 year olds feel the need to be so vocal but I really hope I was nothing like that when I was 10. Near the time when local tourney signups began starting the little kids started to file out giving the store a sense of calmness that was thought by many to be impossible to achieve. Though if you must know MINECRAFT kid was still there.

So after all that I have time to talk to people and they say running heroes at locals is a bad idea because everyone and there mother is running dark world which is bad news for heros. I was thinking whatever as it was just locals but when it was announced the winner of the tourney would get a box of return of the duelist, the stakes were raised. There were around 70 people attending with 4 rounds of swiss and a cut to the top 16. In the end though I stayed with heros just for the sole fact that I have been using and testing the deck for so long now that I know all the plays the deck has and how  to play it correctly that even if I had some bad matchups I could survive. Plus the world needs a hero to save them from the villanous world of darkness that currently enveloped our precious local shop, so Ailus and I teamed up to try to make a miarcle fusion between us happen that would close the gates of the dark world. On to the actual tournamnet report!

DECK USED: Skill Drain Hero(I kept in skill drain for the rouge matchups, which locals tend to have  alot of)

ROUND 1:
DECK FACED: Dark Worlds!
Game 1: Dark worlds ran into their usual consistency issues and I slowly beat him down, he attempted to resolve a dealings but I had dark bribe.

Game 2: He was able to resolve a card destruction, need I say more?

Game 3: This one was also back and forth, 2 of his grapha's were gone thanks to bottomless and d prision but he eventually had the foolish burial to send grapha then summon it and he beat me down from there.

Result: LOSS
Record:0-1
Evil has won this round but good always wins. The heros will defeat the dark World!

Round 2:
DECK FACED: Dark Worlds Again!
Game 1: I stopped his card destruction with bribe, his dragged down took out my dark hole and I sent grapha making me lose a card. I drew into e call from the dragged down and then drew into d prision for my draw. I removed grapha then slowly beat him down.

Game 2: He played gates then got his plusses from there. I used super poly to temporarily get rid of grapha, then dd crow finished the job. I had skill drain when he played tour guide and used miracle fusion to get shining so he couldn't come back.

Result: WIN
Record:1-1
The heros are staging a comeback

Round 3:
DECK FACED: None
My opponent ran away at the sight of such a heroic deck. In normal terms he never showed up.

Result: WIN
Record:2-1

Round 4:
DECK FACED: None again!
I got a bye! Why? Now my tie breakers are horrible and I have a very slim chance of winning that box.

Round 5:
DECK FACED: Lighsworn
Game 1: Lightsworn milled bad and heros are consisitent so I won.
Game 2: This was a pretty back and forth game. Lightsworns milled good but I was able to delay the JD by using reborn to get celestia so now he only had 3 lightsworns in grave. He eventually destroyed celsitia and summoned JD and used bottomless trap hole. For a few turns nothing really happaned as we both drew no monsters until he drew lumina, revived another lumina(he had no cards left in hand) then he overlayed into zenmaines. I drew into ROTA which got me ailus(I had already used stratos) then I used super poly to get nova master and I beat him down from there.

Result: WIN
Record: 4-1

Apparently my tie breakers were bad so no top 8 for me( thanks in part to that bye). Chris however did top 8 with Machina's but he then proceeded to lose against Agents. I watched the game and it was one of the best games I have seen. The agent guy is a regular and I commonly see him at regionals, the game was back and forth but agents pulled out the 2nd win.

After the tourney we hung araound and talked to people then we went off to eat dinner. The newb ryan told us how he went 0-5 which was pretty funny but this was his first ever foray into competitive yugioh. His deck was bad( I told him so!) so he said he wanted to build final countdown( another troll) I just shook my head in dismay. Some other yugioh players were there so we did some trading. Chris and I tested some more and I finally took out bubbleman. Whenever I drew into him he was useless, I just wanted to try him out to give my skill drain heros a little more explosiveness but I must look elsewhere. Overall I was disappointed with my performance today but I have a few more things I am going to be testing out for my hero deck so hopefully it all works out. The hero will rise again as good always wins over evil.

Thanks for reading!

YCS Toronto: What it means for the meta

Hey readers! No, its not Grant, Its me, the supposed main blogger that hasn't been very main, eh whatever. I'm not here to give my usual I was busy speech. No infact I wasn't really busy and have been playing this format alot. So far the format is pretty decent. lets talk!

One little constant annoying thing that just irks me when it really shouldn't is the fact that a YCS happened on the very first day of the format. I always enjoyed going to a regionals before any major event happened and see what the local duelists played. For the people that went to Toronto it really makes no difference but for people like me that really can't go because of school and such, it just irks me, that being said I really should just take it with a grain of salt. Nothing to surprising happened at Toronto though. The one thing that I loved though was Jeff Jones using psychics. I have always liked Jeff Jones because he is the one "pro player" that ventures out of the accepted norm. Remember he did play Nordics at one YCS(I forget which one). Aparntly for the duelists that have been loyal to psychics, you guys now have a deck to go off of. I can bet the farm that we will be seeing more psychics in the future. Also i think we can classify this in the "amazing meta call section" along with Frazier Smith using Gravekeepers at Atalanta. Wind ups winning the event was not really a shock, basically if you followed the news it was a general consensus that wind ups were far from dead. Personally this reminded me of exactly a year ago when Plants has been "nerfed" only to be the best deck and win YCS after YCS in that respective format. People called Plants dead and they weren't, infact they were alive and breathing, if you followed the news, then you knew this. The same situation has happened here. Play the game long enough and history starts repeating itself.

Konami's coverage sucked but at this point that's par for the course. We can't even depend on top cut decklists anymore instead we rely on the now unofficially official yugitubers and  people that were at the event. Come on Konami get your shit in order. Some decks that I saw while looking where plant synchro(nice to see a comeback) among other things. One thing that I have been surprised to see none of is agents. Grant and I have done some extensive testing with them and they are quite good. I will be back with more testing results later. Personally I will be sticking to my heroes(cause apparently I own them). They have proven effective this format and that is evident by the top cut finishes at Toronto. In the most basic form YCS Toronto has provided us with a clear idea of the format right at the beginning of the format and on a much grander scale that the usual regional. November is the month that things get shaken up. Abyss rising comes out which will change the meta and if history has taught us anything probably for the worse. Wind ups winning YCS Toronto is old news. Knowing how to side deck for them is old news as well. This is where yugioh gets intricate, the tiny meta shifts that ultimatley dicate the way the game is played must be determined. We as players must learn to out predict this shift and change with it. YCS Toronto should not be the meta determiner until November. People will shift the way they play in order to better prepare themselves against wind ups, then they will shift again learning how to play against the oppenent that has prepared against win ups. Its complicated but very integral to anyone's success in this game. I will test and be back with more info. Right now I am going to sleep. Goodnight and as always thanks for reading!

The most important thing in any card game player.

Hey guys, its Grant. I'm back with what may be the last post until holiday breaks.  This is all due to the fact that school will be starting up on thursday. So, in my last temporary post i will talk about the most  important thing in any card game player. The most important thing, besides your deck or your money,
is a card gamer's philosophy.

A card gamer's philosophy defines them of what they believe in. That can contain anywhere from what you believe about your game to your views of netdecking to what you believe the company of the game should do if your game ever experiences problems.

I know this is a short post but i just want to know what is your philosophy. Leave a comment showing the following:
What your playstyle is?
Your views on netdecking?
Your view on what your game means to you?

See u guys around the time of the holidays!

- Grant a.k.a " The Pharoh of the shadows"

P.S. Shock master is now the most expensive xyz in the game.  And psychics topped. Love this format.

Knowing the difference between broken, ok, and balanced

Light, shadow, and unity combine! I synchro summon myself, GRANT!!!!!!

Hey guys i'm back with another weekly article which happens to be another yugioh post. I'm probably just gonna do these until school starts( when it does, me and cameron may have a hard time doing the blog every week). My main topic this week is the difference between good, power and broken. Keep in mind these are strictly my own opinions. I just want to clear this up because there are some people who don't know the difference.

Power cards are the cards that at any given time can change the game into any given direction. Most people probably know the power cards(reborn, dark hole, heavy, the solemns etc.), but at least half of our current duelist population misjudge several of the power cards. Believe me, the only power cards that NEED TO GET HIT ARE REBORN AND BLS FOR VERY GOOD REASONS. Dark Hole and Heavy storm are those necessary cards that punish overextension and the solemns are skillful for the fact that u pay a lot of life for negation.

Now, good cards can be split into a whole category: never should be at 3 . Never should be at 3 cards can have boss monsters to search cards to cards like tengu and tour guide. Believe me, tour guide got way more balanced when it reached 2. I also agree with cameron on his philosophy that no deck should have their own search card at 3(2=for most cards or 1=search cards that are easily splashable which is why rota, charge, and allure are at 1.) As for boss monsters, i'm in the belief that no boss monster should be at 3, but i judge each one at a different level. I know that boss monsters on DAD(Dark Armed Dragon)'s level should be at 1(Judgment Dragon,Gyzarus, REDMD etc.). Other boss monsters, such as hyperion, that can't be splashed into other decks or aren't borderline broken, can go to 2.

Finally, we get to broken cards. These are the cards which can enable otks, ftks, constant loops, or even unbeatable locks or just create an unfair advantage. I've already declared that BLS and REBORN need to get banned due to unfair advantage, but there's more cards than that. Everybody knows most of the back in the day cards so i would like to touch upon 2 controversial banned cards: Goyo Guardian and Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier. I've seen many players talk about how these cards were unfairly hit and that they were balanced, but both of these cards happen to be in the same level as Dark Strike Fighter. Goyo Guardian was banned a year ago in March 2011, leaving Brionac as the last good level 6 synchro. What Goyo did was create a massive tempo swing by destroying your oppenent's best creatures(Stardust, Shi En, Brionac, etc.) and using them once they got to your field. Now, Brionac was banned this upcoming September 2012 format. People think Brionac was banned as part of Konami's eliminate synchro-promote xyz deal, but it was so much more than just money. Brionac enabled otks by shutting off backrow, and allowed atlanteans to get their effects off easier. Now i for one think that no other cards need to come off the forbidden list except for crush card and sinister serpent.

Well with that see u all next time!

P.S Here's my final rough draft for agents for all those agent players out there!

Plan for next format

Hey guys its grant, the most mysterious admin on the blog(jk). This time, this post is strictly yugioh related. The banlist is officially leaked and i love the list. I do send my love out to inzektor players as your deck got massacred(Wind-Ups quit bitching u are still alive, and chaos dragons are waiting for their new build). The only thing i didnt like was bls not getting hit and that magic cylinder is at 3!

Bls- I hate this card so much, that i want to rip it, burn it, and piss on its ashes. YES, EXTREME HATRED. I now know how all 2005 veteran players feel about this shit now.

Magic Cylinder- I. Hate. Stall. or. Troll. Decks. End of Discussion

Anyhowsels i will reveal my deck for the new format. WAHLAAA!!!!!!!! Actuallly ill post my deck at the bottom just so you will read this entire post. I thought that if i were to change agents, this is how i would do it. I would run a solid monster count, with heavy protective traps, with spells that would secure my plays outside of veiler or maxx c.

EDIT:(I know it says it was published near 9 but i actually published it just now around midnight)

Relationship with Your Deck

Well everybody i'm not showing u my recent frog monarch deck for nothing. It's grant and i decided to do another yugioh-vanguard dual post due to the success of last week. This will probably be a little shorter though since its late(sorry). Frog Monarchs used to be a well renowned meta deck during the Frog/Infernity/Saber format, however recently it has fallen out of favor with duelists. Only those that truly love the deck play it now. However, what people must realize are two things: They cannot underestimate the power of a certain deck AND no matter what always use the deck that you can connect with. In the yugioh anime, yami stated " When a duelist builds a deck, he chooses his favorites from many different types of cards, but sometimes the card can choose the duelist. The two are connected and the duelist can tap into the card's true power because each is bound by the heart of the cards."

Yami 's statement goes back to vanguard but instead of just the cards its the clans and instead of the heart of the cards there is the winning image. Both of these are necessary to win a vanguard fight and its important to choose a clan that you like the most or fits your playstyle. Going with a deck like gold paladin, not because you like the deck or fitting your playstyle, but playing it because its a top tier deck will not get you far in vanguard.

So, that's all folks! Sorry this got put up so late, but i spent the whole day at frank and sons and at cameron's house, and i didnt get home until i was too tired to write.

See ya next time!

Rabbit Sabers Decklist

I had to use this picture, I just had to

I wanted to post this deck before the new banlist was revealed that way I can get all of my current format decks out of the way and look onward to next format! Honestly the deck is really good, didn't have the guts to take it regionals(and I didn't have rabbits). But I was able to take it to a few wins at locals and on DN(if that means anything to anybody). I try to make all of my orignal deck ideas competitive and I think io have succeeded with this one. The rabbit allows for instant fautroll setups and/or being able to XYZ into a rank 4 to get an out to a situation. Boggart + anu pirrana = easy rank 4, the only down side is that the rank 4 XYZ are no where near as utilitarian as the rank 3's but still good none the less. You good take out the dualitys for anything else, I just really like 2 duality in any saber build(I like the consistency it gives to the deck). The same can be said for the mirror force, i like for the chaos dragon matchup. I only added in one torrential because this version of sabers is alot more aggressive and explosive then regular sabers. I always find myself making some sort of combo play so I cut torrential to 1 and I like it alot better. With roach, beast, and barkion its very easy to achieve soft locks and/or total lockdowns. In regards to the D-Prisions I decided to make the dino rabbit and chaos dragon matchup easier while making the inzektor matchup harder. In my testing inzektors were probably my best matchup just because you don't really play any cards until you have a explosive combo(and with rabbit that happens alot more often than normal sabers) so you don't really commit to the field that much besides the usual setting of darksoul or emmersblade. As always though you can choose to run fiendish chains or any other trap that you see fit(or with effect veilers player preference really).

This version of sabers is more aggressive and there is alot less time spent building up advantage so you can make one giant aggressive push(like in regular sabers) in turn though you sacrifice some stability. All in all I really love this deck and if rabbit only gets semied on the upcoming banlist, this deck will also be perfectly viable for next format as well. if rabbit gets limited, then I go back to regular sabers.

Thanks for reading!

Things to pick up for the new format + Anaheim

Hey ladies, germs, dudes and brohams its grant back with another post on this saturday day. Today, im actually gonna do a dual-post on yugioh and vanguard to appeal to not only my new fans for Vanguard but the loyal followers of yugioh that follow cameron's blog. Also, before i start i want to take the time to give a strong message to the yugioh community. HEAVY STORM SHOULD NEVER LEAVE THE LIMITED LIST UNTIL WE HAVE A SUITABLE REPLACEMENT. It doesnt matter if we have 3 mst and 3 night beam we will be right back to square 1 with a monster+ 4 backrow. No skilled player in yugioh wants that again.( Note: Valafar123 not trying to diss you, i recognize you as a true player but i have always been a heavy/1 mst/1 believer).

Well, there is only 1 crucial thing that comes out during this time of the year which is none other than konami's bit.. i mean ban list. The Ban list stumps our brain since their is no real way to determine what konami is gonna do unless your ishizu ishtar and can see the future with your millenium jewelry. However, I do believe there are certain cards that you should pick up to avoid having to drop your life savings or sell yourself just to get the new stuff.

Without further ado here is the list:
Effect Veiler/ Bottomless Trap Hole- Something tells me these cards are gonna become more of a staple
than they already are with decks such as aqua, hieratics, and lavals coming out in the tcg. Being able to stop potential killing plays will always entice players.

Night Beam- Oh, this card may finally accomplish what me and cameron have wanted for a long time. This card's existence may finally put mst to 1. As a result, the limited amount of backrow hate may spike this card's price up.

Forbidden Lance-  This card, along with tour guide, was the card of the format after we lost ignition priority. I expect this card to be useful yet again.

Fiendish Chain- See forbidden lance.

Dark Magician of Chaos/Magician of Faith- These cards + return of the duelist= money for konami

Tribe Infecting Virus- I would hate this card to come back with all the atlantean support but knowing konami's money tactics they just might do it.

I hope this helps you all. Now onto anaheim.

The Cardfight Vanguard Kick-off event was a lot of fun. I got to meet some vanguard tubers, old friends, new friends and even got eliminated from the single tournament in the 3rd round. I say "eliminated" because bushiroad only gives 1 game per match compared to swiss rounds. However, it was no big deal and i finally got to face gold paladins after months of avoidation. Even got to pick up 2 night beam and a gaia dragon for my frog monarchs.

Anyway, thats it for today. I hope you guys liked the dual-post about yugioh and vanguard.
Next week will probably be a set 3 review.

My September 2012 Banlist

This format has been, how do I put this lightly? Garbage. This format involves a seris of one card combos that once you play that one card you win.  Cards are combos by themselves and many of the decks this format rely on just one card to get the ball rolling with no prior investment. Ex. Dragonfly, Rabbit, Tourguide, future fusion, you get the point. I for the most part made this list with what I want to see happen rather than what I think konami will actually do, but at the end of each card choice description(detailing why I did what I did to the card) I will talk about how likely the card is actually going to be hit by konami(that part is in red for your connivence).

Things I am Trying to accomplish by making this list:

  • I am trying to slow the game down and have no otk's whatsoever
  • I am trying to eliminate 1 card setups/combos(Rescue rabbit, inzektor dragonfly, tourguide)
  • I am trying to get rid of all loops of any kind
  • I am trying to get rid of decks that have no interaction with the other player and act like you are playing a game of solitaire
  • I am trying to do away with badly designed cards even if those cards see little or no play
  • I am trying to get rid of cards that break game mechanics
  • I am trying to get rid of cards that you can just draw off the top of the deck and win
Things I want to male clear
  1. This is not a prediction list though I do have a a certain hint of prediction at the end of every card choice but please take those with a grain of salt as I  have no idea what konmai is going to do in the end.
  2. This list is strictly my opinion and what I would do if I were making the banlist

Banned:
BLS: This card should have never came back. Its summoning requirement is a joke, it wins games by itself, and it removes face up or face down monsters, broken much? I think that there is a reasonably good chance that this card is going to get banned by konami, since it has seen quite a bit of play in chaos drgaons. I would put BLS at a 50/50 chance to be banned.

Wind up hunter: I was thinking how I would hit wind-ups,  making sure I didn't outright kill the deck but I did want to hinder it. Imo hunter's only purpose in the deck is to facilitate the wind up loop. I have watched many videos, read many articles, and talked to many wind up players and I always see/read/hear the same comment. The only reason i run hunter is to be able to loop the hand. A card that's purpose is to facilitate a loop(of any kind) should not exist Loops are not healthy for the game plain and simple. I believe hunter has a good chnace of being banned by konami. It doesn't really hurt their profits(as its only ran as 1 of) but the banning of this card successfully hits wind ups. Its a win win situation.

Morphing jar: Simply put this is a reset button. It is a psuedo cyber/fiber jar. Morphing jar takes any advantage you might have and says" lets start over!" reset buttons shouldn't exist. I would extremely surprised if konami hit this card. It doesn't see alot of play(hardly any really) its just one of those badly designed cards that shouldn't exist and konami has never really hit anything that is in that category.

Gaia Dragon the thunder charger: This card really only sees play in hiertaics but it still breaks the exceed mechanic. The whole point of an XYZ is to overlay for them and once their materials are used up then a XYZ is just a glorified beater. Gaia Dragon however allows you to disregard that "hinderance" and instead allows you to summon another XYZ with piercing(gaia) for the sacrifice of a dead XYZ. This card will probably never get banned plain and simple as konami has no problem printing cards that break game mechanics.

Future Fusion: Some have said hit 5 head dragon instead, I disagree because I am hitting this card not just to hit chaos dragons but because the card design on this card is just bad. With so many graveyard effects running around there is always bound to be some loop or otk affiliated with this card. To add insult to injury it is a auto win when played in chaos dragons. Broken much? I strongly feel that either this or 5 head dragon is going to be hit by konami, but I am leaning towards them banning this card over 5 head because that would kind of be foolish to ban a normal monster. I think futuire fusion has about a 70% chance of being banned with 5 head having a 30% chance(for all of you non math whizzes out there.)

Monster Reborn: I have been asking for this for a very long time. I hate cards where you just say "oh look I drew this, now I win!" This card should not have came back. Plus it is not skillful in the slightest, you just draw and play. Its time for this card to be retired for the next six months. I do think that konmai will ban monster reborn because it has been proven that konami has no problem banning this card then a few formats later limiting yet again.

Mind Control: Imo opinion this card has become no different than brain control. The metagame has proven time and time again that taking advantage from your opponent and giving it to yourself is just to good. I honestly do not think this card has a good chance at being hit. Yes it does see play in all decks, but I just do not see this card as being on konami's radar. I say it has about a 20% chance of being banned.

Limiter Removal: I may sound like a broken record here, but seriously what purpose does this card serve outside of facilitating otks's? A card that exists solely for the purpose of otking or looping simply should not exist. See morphing jar.

Gateway of the six: If you draw this turn 1 in samurai's you win. That is not healthy for the game. Samurai's need to find other ways to win games. See morphing jar/limiter removal.

Card Destruction: I have expressed how I feel about this card many times before. If you draw this in dark worlds you win 9 times out of 10, its basically future fusion but for dark worlds. Since Dark worlds havent done much this format I highly doubt that konmai will hit this card. If and/or when dark worlds do something relevant to the metagame is when this card will get hit.

Final Countdown: I thought about banning one day of piece instead of this, but in all honesty I would just be ignoring the problem. The reason I hate this deck so much is because it doesn't really matter who you are playing against, whenever you play this deck it is like you are playing a game of solitaire. There are no interactions with your opponent, nothing. Just you passing turns playing fader or any other battle phase trick then passing then repeat. This deck shouldn't exist, it requires no interaction with the game at all. Now technically this goes against the solitaire rule that Kevin Tewart posted on the konami blog, but since he was talking out of his ass when he posted those articles I don't see konami actually identifying that this deck should be hit.

Royal Tribute: Even though gravekeepers don't see much play having all the monsters in your hand wiped out is still to good. Gravekeepers have not done anything relevant in the meta so konami will not hit them.

Limited:

Rescue Rabbit: I know by hitting this down to one that it effectively kills the dino rabbit deck. I don't see where the problem is in that. Dino rabbit has dominated the TCG metagame for two formats. The deck has had its time in the spotlight and yes some of you may not like my reasoning, but for one single card to completely reinvent the metagame as we knew it and make normal monsters relevant again and to dominate for 2 straight formats, I believe it is a justified hit. Honestly at some point in the game it will probably join its feline counterpart by being banned, right now that is to harsh but we have yet to see what konami is planning to print. On top of all this it is a one card engine, you just play it and your field is set up. I see konami limiting laggia and semi limiting rabbit more than I see them doing what I have done. In essence they would be taking the same approach in hitting rabbit as they did samurai which wouldn't be entirely bad but not entirely good either.

Inzektor Dragonfly: By summoning this card and having one card in the grave(hornet) you can nuke your opponents field and XYZ up so you can otk. Need I explain more? This card is basically the epitome of what this format is. It is a one card set up there is no actual prior set up(besides hornet) and this card by itself can do all the work of summoning out the other inzektors. No skill high reward. I actually truly beleive that konami will hit dragonfly when they go after inzektors, logically it makes the most sense, it functions as the otk enabler, the one that effectively starts the combo, and the one that starts the nuking of the field, but when has konami used logic to make their banlists?

Grapha dragon lord of dark world: This card is quite possibly the best floater this game has ever seen. It has 2700 atk(sometimes 3000), it comes out for free from the graveyard and when it is sent from the graveyard to the hand it pops a card. One of this card is bad enough to deal with but when you have 3 to deal with it becomes ridiculous. Imo the worst part about this card is that backrow is not a viable answer to it as it usually pops the bacrow when it is discarded, this leaves very few outs besides running macro cosmos which doesn't work in most decks or running dd crow which is not as versatile a veiler. Its a recurring floating boss monster and something that we should have only one to deal with. I honestly don't think will  do this. Konami has shown that they only hit decks that see a ton of play and consistently top YCS's. Dark world has not done this to the extent where I think they are on konami's radar.

Goyo Guardian: Yes I am on the bandwagon that thinks Goyo should come back. Konami has tried to make us believe that synchros don't exist and to a extent they have succeeded. When I was contemplating bringing back this card i thought what decks could utilize Goyo to its full extent. I couldn't think of any. Blackwings were the only deck capable of consistently brining out Goyo and they have fallen of the face of the earth. Yes it is one more boss monster to bring back into the game but no deck in this format can truly utilize it. Taking a XYZ with goyo really only serves the purpose for bringing a beatstick to your side of the field as the XYZ loses its materials. Konami is trying to push XYZ's and make us forget that synchros exist. Bringing back a good sycnhro would go against this products pushing policy so unfortunately I do not see goyo make a triumphant return any time soon.

Red Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon: The summoning requirement is a joke, it summons massive beatsticks with huge atk that enable otk's and it is at the heart of the hieratic otk and is the engine behind chaos dragons. Redmd was already bad enough within those sacky dragon decks of the days of old but when we got really good dragon support Redmd became busted. It enables otk's and that is one thing that I am trying to punish on this list. I say redmd has about a 50% chance of being limited. Gustaph Max is coming to the tcg soon via shoenen jump promo and hieraticts will be a good selling point for konami in the tcg, on the other hand to build a chaos dragon deck you really only need 3 structure decks and a set of reprinted tour guides and you have a tier one deck that is relatively cheap and doesn't make konami much money so it is still up in the air whether or not redmd will get hit.

Judgment Dragon: Lightsworn are pretty dead but that doesn't  make this card any less broken. You just rip it off the top of the deck and most of the time you can play it. Lightsworn is already a sacky deck and judgment dragon only adds insult to injury. Konami has been returning cards to lighsworn rather than taking them away so this looks like a pipe dream.

Rekindling: I was playing against lavals on Dn and this card in conjunction with lavals was able to summon up shooting quasar, once shooting quasar hist the field you lose. Any card that allows you to summon any number of monsters from anywhere is just bad yugioh it factiliates swarming and otking even if rekindling in this case is not use for a otk it is still used as a complete lockdown which is just as bad. Since lavals have not yet seen the limelight here in the tcg I doubt that konmai will hit it, but on the other end of the spectrum konmai still hit blackwings because of the ocg even though they werent doing anything in the tcg. I would give rekindling about a 45% chance at being limited.

E emergency call/shiens smoke signal/hiertaic seal of convocation: No theme should have 3 rotas and even having 2 rotas still is to much searching and makes it way to easy to get to your combo pieces. Konmai might hit miracle fusion over e call but konmai likes to hit the consistency of decks so e call has about a 50% chance of being limited. Konmai will most likely want to keep giving support back to six sams since they have done nothing this format so I think smoke signal has about a 0%(lol) chance at being limited. I think konmai will most likely hit redmd over convocation but if konami doesn't hit redmd I think convocation has about a 80% at being limited as konami likes to hit the consistency of a deck.

Mystical Space Typhoon: This game has to many ways to otk. If you need to otk you need to get rid of backrow. To get rid of backrow you need backrow hate and yugioh has to much of that as well. Part of the reason that otks are running so rampant these days is because of the wide variety of options you have to pop backrow. With mystical space typhoon at 3 it makes all other forms of one of backrow hate irrelevant. Yes mst is a simple one for one but having 3 mst and one heavy storm makes destroying backrow and otking your opponent too easy. I am on the fence of whether konami will limit mst or not. Yes they want to push night beam down our throats but at the same time with less backrow hate means slower games which konami is not a fan of. I give mst about a 40% chance of being limited.

Ultimate Offering: This card is a otk enabler. It rewards you for dumping your entire hand and swarming the field. That kind of play is not only bad for the game but it should not be rewarded whatsoever. Leaving this card at 3 is just asking for abuse. Konami has a ton of machine support coming out in the next few sets and ultimate offering staying at 3 will only help push that. Add that on top of the fact that ultimate offering has seen no play and you have a a very slim chance at konami even hitting ultimate offering.

Royal Oppression: This is definitely the contreversial choice of my list. Simply put I believe that oppression is a necessary evil for the game. On one hand oppression  prevents any kind of comeback for the player that is losing. On the other hand it curbs the extreme special summoning that is running rampant. There is no doubt in my mind that if this card came back everyone would run it, but that would make for a slower format. With the 1 mst you have you might want to save it for this card or give up spots to dedicate to night beam or dust tornado. All in all at 1 I think oppression deserves to come back, yes it makes it near impossible to make a comeback but most likely if you were that far behind you couldn't have made a comeback anyway. Oppression is a very controversial card and konami does like brining back controversial cards, but imo having this card brought back to 1 is a pipe dream for me, konami has proven time and time gain that they want fast formats and oppression facilitates slower formats. I think oppression has a 5% chance at coming back for the sole reason that it is controversial.

Semi Limited:

Tourguide of the underworld: A card is only as overpowered as the stuff it summons, and in tourguides case that is very overpowered. It is one of if not the most versatile cards that yugioh has ever seen. If you limit tourguide to 2 then you pretty much have to summon the other or risk drawing into a dead tourguide later in the game. yes you could just add in tour bus, but that card is sub par and would be dead if you drew it. In essence by only having 2 tourguide it would make the card more awkward to play and a little less powerful. Konami has shown in the past that they are not afarid to hit tcg exclusives. If thats the case then tour guide should have no problem getting hit but I have my doubts about konami actually hitting this card so i think it has a 50/50 chance at being hit.

TG Striker: Striker was unjustly hit. Death by association, just because it was in the tier 1 agent decklists doesn't really mean that TG's were the problem. The real culprit were of course the agents. TG were a pretty balanced deck and since earth was limited the real problem has been dealt with. TG's imo were dealt with because of the unbanning of heavy storm and the semi limiting of tengu and rest easy Kevin Tewart just because they won YCS Atlanta doesn't mena TG's are going to take over the world lol. Again this pushes a slower more sycnhro oriented game which konmai wants no part of.

Wind up carrier zenmighty: If you look at this card as a standalone entity you see that zenmighty is perhaps the best theme support card that a theme could ever hope for, let alone the fact that being able to pull a monster from the deck to mitigate the -1 that you took from making zenmighty. banning hunter stops the wind up loop but I still feel the deck can otk very easily and that is just not acceptable in my book. I could see konami either limiting zenmighty or banning hunter but not what i have just done so don't think that zenmighty will be semi'd, if anything it will be limited.

Black Whirlwind: Black Whirlwind is no where near as broken as gateway and has good restrictions(rightfully so!). Blackwings have been dead for a while now and maybe it is just a certain affinity I have for the deck but I want to see them to be able to at least compete with the other decks out there. Make them at least semi competitive because right now if you run blackwings you are asking to lose. I tried to make blackwings at least somewhat completive but to no avail. The deck can still be played but not successfully. Putting black whirlwind at 2 would make the deck tier 1 but it would help it out immensely and make it worth playing again. I don't like the idea of battle tricks from the hand(honest, kalut) so I didn't want to put kalut back at 2 for that reason. Konami seems to be done with their killing blackwings ways so it seems likely that whirlwind kalut or gale will come back to 2.

Mirror Force: Torrential at 2 was one of the best things konami has done in recent memory. Putting mirror force to 2 would be the second best thing. Like torrential, mirror force punishes overextension and bad players. Mirror force sees relatively low play right now due to the fact that it is a slow card and this is a fast format, with that reasoning konami could put it up to 2, it did put torrential to 2 even though it saw play. I say that mirror force has a 60% chance of being semi limited.

Unlimited:

Spore: Plants need a comeback and as long a glow up bulb stays banned the deck won't be broken. Konami wants to get rid of synchro monsters so bringing this back will go against that policy, so the chance for spore to come back is slim to none.

Destiny Draw: The only decent target for this card is malicious which is dead unless you have this card. Plus with all the broken card effects now days malicious is a good card not overpowered just good. I can see konami bring back d draw because they seem to be pretty good at brining back theme support that has been dead for a while. I say d draw has a 60% chance at being unlimited.

And that is the list! I have been working on this post for quite a while(hence the length and the recent lull in post). Please discuss in the comments and tell me what you agree and disagree(all you Royal oppression haters out there lol). Thanks for reading!

Vanguard Clans and choosing

Hello again followers, its grant back with another saturly post of vanguard. I hope you liked my previous post because , believe me, things will only get better. Today, i will be talking about the current playable english clans. Now, whenever a new clan(s) appear, i will make a post covering it. Talking about clans reminds me a lot about old style yugioh decks. I miss some of those old days when id face cameron's blackwings with my lightsworn or machina gadgets. Even making decks back then was nice. It was fun. Anyway, on to the topic!

Currently there are 9 different clans:

Royal Paladins- Swarm. equivalent to blackwings. -$150-170
Kagero- Field control, Retires opponents rear guards. Kinda like soul taker or inzektor hornet. -$140
Oracle think tank-Focuses on hand advantage and drawing. The only deck i know that can legally stack cards. $200($250-300 once set 3 comes)
Nova grapplers- Beatdown with multiple attacks. Kinda has bad hands, though. -$130
Spike Brothers- Rush Beatdown, equivalent to gbs without chariot. -$110
Granblue- Toolbox the drop zone(graveyard). Takes a skilled pilot to run. $100
Gold Paladin- It swarms like royals but in a much faster way. They superior call the top card of the deck( trust me its an inconsistent way to set up the field.)- $150(Garmore based), $200(Spectral Duke based), $250(Ezel based)
Narukami- Kagero's twin and my favorite deck atm. Controls the field like kagero but in a different manner. Instead of retiring rear guards, they extend pressure so that the opponent will misplay. Also, takes a skilled pilot to run.- $190
Angel Feather- Toolbox the damage zone, and another skilled pilot deck. $200

With these clans in mind i must warn all of you that choosing isnt easy.  In case you already didnt know   , there is no "perfect" deck so choosing would probably depend on these 3 questions?

What is your playstyle?
How creative can you get?
What deck have you truly loved in the past that would make you run 1 of these decks(if you are from yugioh or magic)?

Now, you don't have to stick to these 9 decks, since there are 3 more viable clans being released 2 weeks from today.

Thats really it for today. I know i may have not been funny in this post but ill try to make a joke next time.

Intro and my experience to Cardfight Vanguard

Hello, people of cameron’s blog, my name is Grant(the magnificent shadow dragon). You’ve probably heard of me through many of cam’s posts and you must know that i play cardfight vanguard. It is all true, although since the past week i have decided to play yugioh again(no matter what konami spews out of their king piccolo mouth). Without further ado, I will tell you about cardfight vanguard as well as clear up some rumors behind it .
Cardfight Vanguard is a super tcg(as some may say) due to the fact it combines many aspects from regular tcgs today(magic, yugioh, naruto, pokemon), yet it shows new aspects that i was unfamiliar with. First, is the aspect of
the drive and damage check. When i first heard of this, i thought it as whatever, but over time through those checks you can remember what is in your opponent’s hand(to calculate what they can guard with or whatnot). The second new factor would be there are no further use of other cards outside of units(no spells or traps). I found it awkward to transition from yugioh or magic to vanguard when all i saw was creatures. However, i then realized that every card represents defense and offense as they can either go to the field or be used as a shield. Finally, last but not least, the 3rd new interesting factor would be the triggers. Many YGO and MTG players have often used the sacky factor of the triggers to avoid playing the game, but through playing all 3 of those games ive seen some sort of sackiness within all 3( YGO: easy topdecks/loops/otks, MTG: mana screwed/miracle). People may think triggers are a random factor(like cameron stated in “The Random Factor”) in contrast, i see triggers as an avoidable random factor, since all you need to do is guard appropriately(Not going against cam, but just saying).

Now, the top 5 excuses why people say they wont get into vanguard( this is the clearing up rumors part):

5. “ It doesnt take skill”
Wrong, this game takes plenty of skill. You may not think of it as much but there are many skills to master in this game( guarding, placing proper RG columns, card counting, activating skills without wasting your counterblast/ soulblast, making proper use of your deck). Of course, those aforementioned skills come after you have played the game for a while, but there are people who do not last long because of whoknowswhat.

4. “There is no organized play”
This is a somewhat old excuse, since now WE HAVE ORGANIZED PLAY!!!! In fact, we have the first official vanguard tourney at the anaheim convention center on august 4th. After that there are regionals staring in september. However, what disturbs me the most is when some YGO players and MTG players say that. Uh, hello there was a time when your games didnt have organized play and yet people played those games anyways.

3. “ It’s a rip-off of YGO/MTG”
I laugh at this comment. Just because a game has some random game aspect from another game doesnt mean its a rip-off. If that’s the case then yugioh is a ripoff of magic:the gathering. But its not a rip off of Magic and neither vanguard is to yugioh/magic.

2. “ I don’t have enough money to play 2 card games”
I do understand we live in a shit of an economy and some of us are poor. If u wanted you can just buy a trial deck and limit yourself to that. You actually have a chance to win with a trial deck.

1. “This game won’t last”
This is probably the most irritating(and common) excuse ive heard. IT IS THIS TYPE OF BELIEF THAT KILLS UPCOMING TCGS. Believe me, nothing lasts forever(except family and friendship(dont confuse me with tea)). But even without that cardfight vanguard did take off ladies and gentlemen.

Cardfight Vanguard is a great TCG and if you have access to it, i definitely recommend you try it out. I’ve already stated that im going to play both vanguard and yugioh, so i can balance out 2 card games and so can you. This is just the start of my ongoing articles of vanguard. Next week, i will go over the different clans of vanguard in the english format..
Until next time, see yah!

Talking Yugioh #1

After a long and restful vacation I am finally back to writing on ze blog. Anyways I always like doing these kind of posts where I talk about what the team is doing, my thoughts on certain ideas and so forth. The problem was I never knew what to name these posts so I would name them something generic. I think I finally thought of an decent name and one that catches the essence of this post. Enough with all of this boring talk let's get to yugioh!

Grant and I have been recently been staying up pretty late talking about his dark world turbo deck that he is trying to build. We were initially going to run triple sillva but after some testing we realized why no one does that: its horribly inconsistent. Even with the plentiful discard outlets it still wasn't up to par with the rest of the deck. Instead we cut sillva to one and added in some staples that we cut for the sillvas and the deck worked out like expected. We were proud of the deck. The deck doesn't really stray from the norm very much but the one sillva that acts like a tech card really does add a lot of power to the deck. The only traps that we have in the deck are 2 torrential and the solemn judgment. I will post up the deck list once we make sure the deck is perfected. BTW card destruction in dark worlds is like future fusion in dark world, you play it and you win. So far the only bad matchup is the mirror considering all of the discard outlets we use to our advantage they can use as well. Other than that the chaos dragon matchup is winnable about 70% of the the time. The decks best matchup is rabbit or hero, once u get grapha out you pretty much win.

I was recently looking over the set the return of the duelist and the set is shaping up to be pretty decent. There's not a lot of love for competive play but that also means there are no insanely broken cards yet either. The cover card is fantastic in heroes and makes them very good and able to otk very easy. Gear gigant x is also extremely good in gadgets almost too good.  Soul drain is a card that I have waited for, for almost my entire competive yugioh career, and  that card hands down is my favorite card in the set. I can definatley see that card being used competitively. Other than those before mentioned cards nothing seems to be really good/broken. The spell book archetype is something I would be interested in for the sake of reliving my childhood when I used my horrible spellcaster deck. Its good to see spellcasters getting some support despite that support being mediocre at best. I just hope konmai doesn't print ridicousley overpowered cards for tcg exclusives, it would be nice to have a non game changing set for a change, but we all know that won't happen.

I actually get a lot of questions from people at locals/readers of the blog asking me why I still care about a format that doesn't have anything else to offer. I honestly don't know why I still care about formats when they reach their end. Grant and I have always been like that while our other teammates are normal people and look onward to next format. In just am always eating sleeping and dreaming yugioh lol.

On one final note the poll asking about the card fight vanguard article every Saturday is over and the yes answer won by a landslide so expect a vanguard article written by Grant tomorrow and I will hopefully have my ban list wish list up no later than Sunday night.

Thanks for reading this poorly organized post!

Not able to post for a week

So I'm on vacation and the hotel I'm at has WiFi, but unfortunatley my netbook crashed so I am unable to use it. I am typing this on my phone(which the smaller size keyboard is less than optimal to type long posts on). So I'm sorry but until I get home no blogging for me! I hope you understand!

Chaos Hero decklist

EDIT: Thanks to LFN for pointing out that I did not have any tourguide lol( when I played the deck at my locals I did not have access to tour guide at that time so I played without them and forgot to add them in when I got home!)

So here is the deck I have been playing most of the format. I recently took out the maxx C's and a breaker for thrasher and a 2 mst's. For the most part it combines the anti meta aspect of heros with the more aggressive aspect of the chaos engine. I choose to only play 3 traps in order to try to stop the aggressive pushes that my opponents make. The one thing that I absolutely love about this deck is the fact that it really doesn't have to commit anything to the field to win. There are times were I summon doom cal and pass and other times when I special thrasher summon startos search ailus exceed into armor ninja play miracle summon a hero fusion(if I have the requirements which I usually do) and go for a agressive push.

Thrasher opens up so many plays to the deck and since there are some really solid rank 4's to summon he just gets more utility every time a new rank 4 is released.

Tragodia is really the only card that needs explaining. Trag is one of my favorite cards in the deck because of the utility he brings to the table. he can be used defensively to block attacks when he has enough attack, he can be used offensively by stealing the opponents  monster using him to make a rank 4 then summoning another beater to attack with. It is plays like those that make the deck so good.

There are games where i have won with the hero engine and times when I have won with just the chaos engine. The only matchup that I truly struggle with is of course chaos dragons. Chaos Dragons are able to do everything this deck can just better. A good side deck can mitigate this for the most part but you still only have a 50/50 chance which imo are not good odds. Other than that the deck performs well against inzketors because of how little it can commit to the field but still backs itself up with gorz and trag. Rabbit is definitely the best matchup(as is the case with normal heros). Overall the deck is very strong and seems to be able to handle this sacktastic format.

Before I go I have a question to ask all of my readers. Would you like to read a cardfight vanguard article every Saturday? The article would be written by Grant(one of my team members) and the articles would discuss decks, strategies, and the meta. Don't worry the blog would still remain a yugioh blog at large(I'm not going anywhere!) and cardfight vanguard would only be featured on Saturday. Leave your thoughts in the comments below and I have a poll near the top of the blog asking this same question so make sure to vote! Thanks for reading!

New Look to the blog!

So that depressing rainfall template finally got to me lol. I like the simpleness of this template a lot better. Tell me if you like or don't like. On a final note I took down that subscribe by email option as that was getting zero use and I updated my blog header and my list of decks I have played/ am currently playing. Hopefully you like the new updates.

Wind Ups win NAWCQ(recap of NAWCQ)

The results are in! The battle lines were drawn and Wind Ups won the war. Tyler Tabman took the gold. In all seriousness it wasn't really out of the realm of possibility for wind ups to do good infact I figured that they would at least have some tops, however I didn't expect them to win..... but we have seen this entire scenario before. People side for the major contenders(in this case rabbit, dragons, and inzektors) and either completely forget about other non major contenders ot give them a token concession and maybe fit a card that is specific for them or try to fit a card that is widely good against all decks but not focussing on just wind ups.

Wind ups were clearly left unchecked here. This has happened before, when dark worlds got no spots in the top cut at YCS atlanta because people over sided for them then won YCS long beach because people undersided for them. This is pretty much the same situation just on a much more prestigious scale. Wind ups are good everybody knows that its just that chaos dragons, inzektors, and rabbit were nerfed because of the heavy siding doen against them. I have to hand it to Tyler he made a great meta call realizing that wind ups are still a fantastic deck capable of fighting with the grown ups just kind of forgotten about.

The top 16 was as follows:
9 Dino Rabbit
5 Wind ups
1 Anti monster
1 Chaos Dragon

Clearly this shows that chaos dragon were in the sights of everyone as it occupied a paltry one spot. This should not be surprising though considering that chaos dragons have just won the two most recent YCS's(philly and toulouse) clearly stating that they were a threat heading into NAWCQ. Dino Rabbit continues to be good but that should be old news to every person playing this game. Apparently wind ups did trend pretty high considering they did occupy the 2nd most spots and also restates what I said in the last 2 paragraphs. The ani monster deck is whatever as there is laways that one rouge deck that sneaks in there. Also on a side note the lone chaos dragon deck is being piloted by Jarel Winston for anyone who cares. On side note #2 no inzektors? Konami never posted the top 32 parings so i can't be sure if inzektors topped( I would think they would) but it does seem weird that inzektors wouldn't at least have a single spot. Their field clearing abilities are legendary lol.

The top 8 is as follows:
3 Dino rabbit
3 Wind up
1 Chaos Dragon
1 Anti monster

So 2/3 of the dino rabbit decks were ousted and now wind up and dino rabbit were neck and neck. The Chaos Dragon continues to prevail and hangs in there. The anti monster also stays in. The same 4 decks that were represented in the top 16 are also still all represented in the top 8. At this point I was thinking that it really is still anyones game.

The top 4 is as follows
1 Chaos Dragon
1 dino rabbit
2 wind up

So konami never actually posted the last deck that comprised the top 4. They never actually even posted the top 4, I was able to get the known decklists by looking at feature matches. I will assume though that the last spot is dino rabbit but I cannot be for certain.

The finals
wind up mirror match!
The last duel was quite good with Tyler Tabman eventually winning against Robert Lewis, but take into account this was Robert lewis's first ever WCQ so not bad at all for a first timer actually not bad at all even for a pro. The first game was over in a flash as Tabman pulled off the loop that magically makes your opponents hand vanish into thin air and then reappear in their graveyard! What I found interesting is that Lewis mained maxx C which has seen alot less play as the format moves along. Maybe he made a good meta call and predicted that other people would play wind up because they knew that wind up hate was relatively low and he could hate on wind ups therefore giving him a edge. Or maybe he thought it was a good card. Lets go with the latter.
In game 2 Lewis was able to loop 3 cards out of Tabman's opening hand which gave him a massive advantage. Lewis fought back with mirror force and snowman eater, but lewis dre into a instant fusion allowing him to bring out a scrap dragon and finish the job.
In game 3 Tabman was able to get all 3 zenmaity on the board and quickly wrap up the NAWCQ.

Congratulations to Tyler Tabman and everyone who is going to tokyo for worlds the official list is:

For the all-ages World Championship:
Tyler Tabman, 17, from Overland Park, Kansas
Robert Lewis Jr., 25, from Mt. Sterling, Kentucky
Jarel Winston, 21, from New York, New  York
Kevin Rubio, 19, from Pennsauken, New Jersey
Adrian Shakir, 22, from Colorado Springs, Colorado
Michael Steinman, 18, from Burlington, Iowa
And for the Dragon Duel World Championship
Tyler Nilson, 12, from North Port, Florida
Zachary Leverette, 13, from Winston, Georgia

Courtesy of konami
There really isn't any well known pros save for Jarel Winston, and Tyler Tabman has been performing very well in the past few events and I have seen his name a few times(I could be overlooking a big name that I don't know or some other "pros" could have been in the top 32). Also Robert Lewis was the runner up and this was his first WCQ! I am looking forward to worlds and hopefully these North American reps see victory!

Overall this seems like a decent NAWCQ. We have some relatively well known names mixed in with a lot of fresh faces. Wind ups winning isn't a WTF win, it is in the realm of possiblity though I do wish konami posted the top 32 parings so I could see if some well known faces topped and what other decks topped as well, but konami will be konami. Thanks for reading and good luck to everyone who was successful today.

The Random Factor

Well, well, well. Look who's back! I know I have been dead since march. Yugioh has been uninteresting to me as of late but I have of course been keeping up with it all. Today I wanted to talk to all of you about something that has been discussed many times before: the sackiness or random factor in a game that no matter to what degree you plan to there is always that one random factor that you in no way figured, or maybe you thought all hope was lost until that one random event happened.

That one random event can take the form of many things. I will give a few examples. For all of you Civilization 5 players out there(myself included) El Dorado(the world wonder) gives the player who found it first 500 gold immediately. Now in the early game that heavily sways the balance factor. Normally 500 gold would take many turns to accumulate because it takes a while to get a strong economy up and running. But if you have that 500 gold right away you don't have to wast preciuos early game turns to produce a worker, warrior, etc. You can now buy one instantly giving you a bonus that will give you the lead right away and if you play smart you will never lose it. That oen discovery has now influenced the entire game. Another civilization 5 example would be the ruins. When one person discovers a ruin they might find a map of the surrounding area and its advantages are quickly lost as that area would be discovered eventually anyway. Another person might discover a ruin that gives them a free technology which in most cases puts that person ahead by about 5-10 turns which is huge in a civ 5 game. There is no way you can change the outcome of the ruins, or who finds el dorado first or if it even spawns at all.

Another example would be the random factor in Pokemon(I hope this example reaches a broader audience than the last!) In online battles people try to out predict their opponent while trying not to over predict the opponent so they still get the super effective hit on them.  These are a sereis of judgment calls that player decides to make that will ultimately determine the outcome of the battle. However critical hits can occur which in most cases completely nullifies the decision and doesn't care what judgment call you made as it will still do a ton of damage potentially even knocking out the Pokemon. Also when moves miss that is also a random factor though to a lesser extent because that can be characterized as risk vs. reward(which is for another day).

So why am I bringing all of this up, what does this have to do with yugioh? This all comes from a certain realization that I had today and it told me why I hate the random factor so much. Please keep reading as I will make it worth your time.

Today Grant and I went to locals. Grant is now off of yugioh mode and is riding the cardfight vanguard train. He implored me to try the game(I had heard of it but ignored it for the most part up until now). I agreed and we set up and were ready to play. He gave me a choice of a few decks and I choose oracle think tank because he said it required "skill" and had the highest learning curve. Its in my nature to always start with something difficult as I learn best that way. Grant played kagero. I won game 1. I won again in game 2. I won yet again in game 3. We switched decks. I won again this time with kagero. We waited awhile and Grant was able to complete his narukami deck. I played oracle think tank and lost game 1 and 2, won game 3. Then I played kagero and won game 1, and Grant won game 2, after that we decided to stop. How was able to win so many times against him? I have been playing for mere hours and Grant has dedicated months to practicing his technique with all 3 of his decks. The one that took the most "skill" oracle think tank, I won with the most and still won a number of games with his other decks. I looked for answers wondering why i won. By all means I should have lost, there is no way that I could have won against a player that has dedicated much of his time to that game. Then it came to me it was the triggers.

The person that won each game was the one who pulled the most triggers. A crit trigger when I had 4 damage, a heal trigger when I had 5 damage, a draw trigger to be able to block that last attack with the monster I drew. Triggers are a random factor. Quite possibly one of the most annoying random factors in any game i have ever played because of the sheer volume that they are produced at. I am not bashing the game of vanguard. I think it is quite fun, but I have read on many forums, watched many videos, and heard many former yugioh players extol the virtues of vanguard and shove off yugioh. When infact both games have their respective problems. One game is not significantly better than the other. Both are struggling on how much the skill/random factor should weigh in on games.

Many people call what I call the random factor the luck factor. I don't like this name because it is not statistically possible to be more lucky than the other person. Just because one person tosses a coin and gets heads 3 out of 4 times, and another person tosses a coin and gets heads only once out of 4 times does not mean that the first person has a 75% chance at heads and the second person only has a 25% chance at heads.

The point of this post is my realization. All things have a random factor there is no game that  doesn't have just a little random factor in it. We cannot control this random factor and unfortunately to my dismay there is no way to curb it either. This realization has made me like yugioh more for what it is. I still do not like many of konmai's policies and the way they run their business but yuigioh and many other games at their core they are skillful it is just the outside influences and in yugiohs case the outside influence is konmai. These outside influences sway the game to what it is. I am not saying that we should put up with konmai's policies but don't extol the virtues of any game until the random factor is truly deduced.

Btw on a unrelated note, i know I have been gone for a few months but hopefully I can post at least twice a week. I have taken a hiatus from yugioh for a while, but I am back now and will start in full force once the september banlist is put into effect(hopefully it is decent). I also would like to thank to all my loyal followers and readers for putting up with my negligence of the blog, I truly don't deserve this generosity.

Locals Report 3-3-12

Yes I am back. I do apologize for not posting in a while( you've heard that before lol) but I was super busy studying for a big exam and then I got sick. Then as I was getting better I got hit with the flu WTF. I even got a flu shot but apparently that didn't help oh well. So to sum it up I was sick for the past 2 weeks and busy withs school. I am back on track with my posting schedule so I can guarantee regular posts for the rest of march. Anyway I went to locals today!

I choose to go with my Chaos Heros again today. I have been testing the deck out extensively and it has gone very well. Despite the lackluster 3-2 record last local, I was determined to do better this time. I don't really need anything before the tourney this time but i do find out that my local has changed to only 4 swiss rounds which is a little weird because we still have our usual 40+ people but whatever.

Round 1: Chaos Heros Vs. Blackwings
Duel 1: The game is back and forth in the beginning with each of us summoning a monster and it getting destroyed next turn by a attack. He summon DAD mid game he attacks me directly but next turn I have a miracle fusion in hand to summon shining with 2900 atk I continue to beat face but two turns later he summons sirroco sp bora and gale halfs and kaluts for game! Oh blackwings I love and hate you all at the same time.

Game 2: Again it is back and forth until I get some temp going by denying him his +1 icruas atk by using geni spark on his face down. I then continue to beat face with tkro and ailus until he summons sirroco sp bora pumps then plays leeching the light WTF man.

Result: LOSS
Record 0-1
He was a good player but a bad deck is still a bad deck but i digress. He did have some good plays. Time to win my next 3 rounds!

Round 2: Chaos Heros Vs. Chaos Dragons
If this is anything like a movie the hero always defeats the dragon and saves the princess so I should automatically win here right? In all seriousness she is a regular player at the shop and a decent one at that.
Game 1: She gold sarcs for future fusion then sets masked dragon. I beat face with beaters then summon doomcal to solidify my field. her only out is future fusion but that is to no avail as I draw into mst and promptly destroy it winning the game.

Game 2: She starts off with wyvern and begins the whole light pulsar and darflare dragon thing with redmd, I survive the turn thanks to trag with 3k atk, then I gemini spark her backrow, allowing me to summon BLS and I win the game because BLS is too good and needs to be banned.

Result: WIN
Record: 1-1
If you are still curious the hero saved the day lol.

Round 3: Chaos Hero Vs. Dark World
He was a good player and a regular so so far I wasn't paired against newbs which is good.

Game 1: My deck has a pretty good dark world matchup for the most part. It is pretty back and forth from teh get go until I use heavy getting a plus 2 then miracle fusion for shining and get more advantage with spirit reaper by that time the deficit is too much and he can't come back.

Game 2: I use breaker and mst to keep his gates off the field then I use chaos sorc to remove grapha and from there I win.

Result: WIN
Record: 2-1

Round 4(final round): Chaos Heros Vs. Dark World
Again he is a regular and I have played against him multiple times and we have had some good games so this will be good.
Game 1: He gets off his dark world combos earky game and I have no outs and lose.
Game 2: The game goes on forever but at the late game the chaos sorc to reove grapha and the spark to destroy the other grpha is so clutch and I win.
Game 3: The game goes into time so I mind control his defence, mst his backrow, use miracle fusion to summon the shining and summon chaos sorc and ailus and hammer home immense damage, he tries to come back next turn after using dark hole but i have torrential and I win.

Result: WIN
Record: 4-1
Top 8 time!

Top 8: Chaos Heros Vs. Hero Beat
Game 1: The game is very back and forth but I built chaos heros to speficfically have a good mid game which heros don't usually have and that is what happens so I win.

Game 2: Again another back and forth duel until he rips a monster reborn and gets advantage and wins, a fine example of why that card should be banned.

Game 3: I sound like a broken record here but it is aback and forth game and at the end game we both can't draw into a monster until I draw miracle fusion and summon shining and win.

Result: WIN
Top 4 time!

Okay no top 4 time we decide to split some store credit and hidden arsenal 5 packs. I get some sleeves, a skill drain, and a cyber dragon all with some store credit plus $1 of my own money so that is a cool deal. I actually stay a while longer and my friends and I do some theory-oh while Grant and his newest obsession (Cardfight vanguard) play in a CV tourney with 10 people but every game has to start somewhere right? After the tourney we go to Jack in the box and discuss more yugioh and I pull a shit ton of gemnight stuff from my packs. After that we all head home. Overall the day was alot of fun and I still don't really like CV.
Thanks for reading

At this point you have to fight fire with fire. Konami has practically made you buy ORCS as you either play wind ups or inzektors or burn in hell. Words cannot describe how angry I am. Imo it is simply wrong to not hits a deck(in this case decks) because you want to promote product. The game was at stake here at a stake has been driven through its heart. I will have my full analysis tomorrow because right now I am going to a friends house to play some video games!
